As a fellowship, we seek to witness to the love of God in Christ by sharing our faith, hope, and life with the Helensburgh community. Alongside this, we are developing an online community that enables engagement with our fellowship and teaching from further afield.

A Note From Our Pastor

As a Baptist church, we are committed to growing our life together under one head of the Church—Jesus Christ, our Saviour. When we gather, we do so under the authority of God’s Word, the Bible. We are a friendly evangelical Christian fellowship, seeking to live out Jesus’ teaching in an honest and open way. No pretence. No performance. Just genuine faith lived out in community.

We are members of the Evangelical Alliance and are committed to promoting evangelical Christianity—simply put, a Gospel-centred faith. Our practice, values, and standards are rooted in biblical Christianity, and those who teach and preach in this church seek to be faithful heralds of the Word of God. Without the Gospel, there is nothing, so we continually return to the basics.

My prayer is that this church would be a place where real people encounter a real God and find meaningful connection with one another. We are a church family focused on prayer and praise, walking together as we seek to live the life Jesus calls us to live.

Our Heart

Our heart as a church is simple: to live out the Gospel together with sincerity, humility, and love. Everything we do flows from a shared desire to follow Jesus faithfully and to grow under the truth of His Word.

We believe church should be a place where real people meet a real God, and where life is shared honestly, in fellowship and hope. Wherever you are on your journey of faith—just beginning, returning, or long-established—you are welcome among us.

New here? You’re very welcome

Visiting a church for the first time can feel daunting — we get it. Here’s what to expect at Helensburgh Baptist Church:

  • What’s a Sunday like?
    Our Sunday service starts at 11am and lasts around 75 minutes. There’s worship, prayer, and a Bible-based message that connects faith with everyday life.
  • What should I wear?
    Whatever you’re comfortable in. Some people dress up, others come in jeans — there’s no dress code here.
  • Will I be singled out?
    No. You’re welcome to come, sit, and simply observe. If you’d like to chat afterwards, there’s tea and coffee and friendly faces — but there’s no pressure.
  • What about children?
    Children are very welcome. XTRA Ark runs during the family service and provides a safe, caring space led by our Ark team.

Vision Statement
To grow in the knowledge of God through Christ Jesus, our risen Saviour and Lord, and to extend God’s Kingdom by living out the Gospel in our lives, our church, and our community.

We pray in the Spirit, seeking God's guidance in all we do. Prayer isn't a ritual—it's our lifeline to the Father and the foundation of our community life. We come before Him with dependence, trust and expectation, knowing He hears and leads His people

Unity

We are made one in Christ by the Spirit of God. Our task is to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. We seek to be at peace with one another, to forgive quickly, to bear with each other, and to walk in the same mind and purpose for the sake of the Gospel. We avoid anything that harms unity - grumbling, envy, harshness or causing our brothers or sisters to stumble.

Humility

We commit to walking in humility towards one another, just as Christ humbled Himself. We put others before ourselves, honour one another, and show gentleness and patience. Scripture calls us to regard one another as more important than ourselves and to clothe ourselves with a humble attitude in all things

Love

We love one another because He first loved us. Through love, we serve, encourage and build on another up. Scripture calls us to devote ourselves to one another, greet one another with kindness, and let everything be done in love.



Elizabeth Sale — Local Roots, Global Service

Elizabeth’s ministry was quiet, persistent, and relational. Trust was earned slowly through presence and service rather than force or spectacle. Her work helped shape the wider Baptist Zenana Mission and opened the way for Baptist women to be recognised as missionaries in their own right. The Church believed it was important for this history to be carried forward.

Elizabeth Sale’s story has been explored by our children’s ministry through a short documentary, created as part of their learning about faith, history, and service. In telling her story, our young people discovered that faith is something lived and shared across generations — not just remembered, but carried forward.

XTRA - Children and Youth Ministries

The wonderful Wizard of What? - show time at Helensburgh Baptist Church

A LOCAL drama group run by children brought a Scottish twist to The Wizard of Oz last Saturday.

XTRA Ark Sunday

XTRA Ark begins at 11am within the family service, before moving to its own space at 11.30am. Under the leadership of Ruth and Katie The Ark team offers a safe, welcoming environment where children are encouraged, supported, and gently introduced to faith as part of the wider church family. Our volunteers are PVG checked.

XTRA Young Peoples Group

XTRA Young Peoples Group on Mondays 6.30pm-8pm. This group welcomes young people from primary 7 to Secondary Third Year. Games, skill building and peer group socialising. Learning about Christian Faith.

XTRA Teen Creative Study Group

XTRA Teen Creative Study Group in the Church at 2.00pm-3.30pm Sunday.

Beginning Sunday 1st March 2026 with 'Writing a Psalm of your own'.

Children aged 8 years -15. Our children's clubs run concurrently to the school holidays.

We have a number of bible study groups both at home and in church at various times during the week.

Rekindled

Rekindled is a Women's gathering rooted in prayer, faith, and shared life.

Rekindled offers a welcoming space for women to pause, reflect, and seek God together.

We meet monthly in the church and are open to women of all ages and backgrounds — whether you are part of the church or simply exploring faith.

Rekindled is not about having everything figured out. It is a place for prayer, listening, thoughtful conversation, and fellowship across the different seasons of life. Through shared reflection and time together, we create space for God to meet us where we are.

At Rekindled, we value honesty, gentleness, and encouragement, trusting that faith grows best in community and that God listens when we call to Him.

Tea+ U

Our Friday community Outreach has recently celebrated 20 wonderful years of Community Outreach.

Previously known as T and U and in the summer months and Soup and U in the winter.

Our summer season will be starting on Friday 13th of March and we will be reverting to our summer times of 2pm-4pm

This dedicated group of outreach volunteers decided this year it was time to try a little name change. Everything else remains as wonderful as it was previously.

Hot food, warm space, all welcome including children.

Special Events and Conferences

Throughout the year, we host special gatherings designed to deepen faith, build community, and celebrate God's goodness together.

JOIN IN WITH CONTRAFLOW AND SCRIPTURE UNION SCOTLAND

SEASIDE ANNIVERSARY LAUNCH NIGHT on 5th JULY

Bethesda Christian Fellowship in conjunction with Contraflow and Scripture Union Scotland are celebrating 50 years of Seaside Special. The focus will be on what God has done in and around our home town over the last 50 years. Seaside Special was lanched by Contraflow for children and young people over the summer break from school. The seaside special lasts a week in itself however Contraflow does year round work through their vision :

To share God's Love with young people in the area and to see them responding to the significance of Jesus through:

  • Exploring the Bible with the children and young people
  • Building relationships with the young people and their families
  • Supporting youth activities in the churches
  • Our passion and enthusiasm for the work is inspired by the Great Commission, which Jesus gave his disciples

Fellowship Gatherings

We always catch up with a cuppa after Sunday family service — an informal and invaluable time of fellowship.

Soup and U is now finished for the winter — our Friday Warm Space Gathering. We now commence our summer times of 2pm–4pm and are back to Tea and U. This outreach has been a focus in the local community for 20 years.

We also have links with The Scripture Union and are part of The Baptist Union of Scotland. We also partner with the Evangelical Alliance. We have extensive activities over the summer.

Deep Sea Divers Holiday Club

6th–10th July, 10am–12:30pm at Bethesda Church, Helensburgh, for primary school aged children, hosted by Contraflow.

Easter Sunday 2025

“God kept drawing me in — gently and persistently — until I could finally say with confidence, ‘Jesus is Lord.’”

God kept drawing me in — gently and persistently — until I could finally say with confidence, “Jesus is Lord.” Even before I knew Him, He had been kind to me, blessing me with my beautiful son (Psalm 127:3).

In time, I heard the good news with fresh ears: that God loves us, that Christ died for our sins and rose again, and that whoever believes in Him has eternal life (John 3:16).

Since being baptised, I’ve watched my life blossom before my eyes. I graduated with a 2:1 LLB in Scots Law, began a Master’s in Human Rights Law at the University of Glasgow, and through it all the Lord has blessed me and my son with even more love, peace, and answered prayer.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17), and I owe everything to God’s grace. My desire now is to glorify Him forever (Psalm 115:1), fixing my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith (Hebrews 12:2).

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

My baptism had been on my heart for many years. Even as a child, reading my Bible without fully understanding it, something was planted that never left. Throughout my life, God placed people around me—across Scotland, Bermuda, and my nursing career—who quietly carried the Gospel. Those moments were seeds that, in time, took root.

After a prolonged season of personal challenge, I found myself spiritually weary and searching for solid ground. In that time, Scripture began to speak with new clarity, and one verse became a steady guide:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

Being baptised and becoming part of the church confirmed something deeply important to me: fellowship steadies the soul. Walking alongside others who pray, encourage, and journey together makes all the difference.

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Coming to Christ has filled my heart with a deep joy and excitement that I didn’t fully understand before. Where faith once felt distant, I now know the love of the Lord in such a real and personal way. As it says in Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him,” and that truly reflects what I have found, joy, peace, and a renewed sense of purpose in my life.

Being baptised is such a special step for me. My way of joyfully saying that I belong to Jesus and that I’m stepping into the new life He promises. 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” and I feel so thankful and excited for that new beginning.

One of the greatest blessings on this journey has been experiencing the love of my church family. Here at Helensburgh Baptist Church, I’ve been welcomed with such kindness and encouragement, and it has meant so much to me. As Hebrews 10:24–25 says, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds encouraging one another,” and I have truly felt that encouragement every step of the way.

Today, my heart is full of gratitude and happiness for the love of Jesus, for the joy He has placed in my life, and for the wonderful family of believers who walk alongside me. I feel so blessed, and I’m excited for all that God has ahead as I continue this journey with Him
